Free speech is a cornerstone of democratic governance and a non-negotiable human right. Any attempt to curtail it not only infringes upon individual freedoms but also weakens mechanisms of accountability, transparency, and public trust in governance. In Nepal, peaceful youth-led social movement against corruption and unaccountable government have escalated into a national crisis, leaving dozens killed, key institutions destroyed, and an alarming political vacuum. These developments demonstrate both the courage of young people demanding accountability and the urgent need for responsible leadership to restore stability and uphold democratic values. Our organization deeply regrets and strongly condemns the use of violence towards the youth protesters. We also call for full restraint to avoid further destruction of property and loss of lives. Alongside other civil society organizations, we call upon all concerned actors, concerned authorities, civil society, and the international community to protect human rights, safeguard democratic institutions, and prevent further violence. In solidarity with Nepal’s youth, we oppose disproportionate measures against peaceful demonstrators, urge constructive dialogue, and independent investigations that will pave the way toward stability and justice.
